The Aroma of Christ

2 Corinthians 2:14

But thanks be to God, who always leads us… and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ...

One morning as I entered my workplace, one of my colleagues walked in at the same time. She was a bright, hard-working, single young woman, and a former military officer. She was an interesting person, but the nature of our workplace and the management’s hard-driving style didn’t afford much time to get to know other people. We exchanged greetings, and then out of the blue she said, “I admire you for how well you conduct yourself in a very difficult and pressured work environment”.

I was taken aback, and said, “Oh, thanks. God - that’s my source of strength.” I added, “Hey, I have my good days and bad days.” She replied, “I wish that I could be like that and feel that way about God.” I thought for a second and said, “You know, one day you’ll meet someone, and you’ll just see something in them and their life and you’ll want to be like them; that’s how God got to me”. Then she said something I wasn’t ready for. “You’re that person for me.”

After leaving my job, she emailed me to say she had a surprise - she was expecting a baby! I responded, telling her how happy I was that she was open to life, since she would be a single mom. I said I hoped everyone in the office was being supportive of this decision. She answered, “They don’t know yet. You’re the first person from work I’m sharing this with!” A year later, I was seeing photos and hearing stories about her baby girl. The Lord showed me that we are truly his “aroma” wherever we go.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE: How can you work to spread the knowledge and “aroma” of Christ?
