God's Business

Colossians 1:27

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

In the nearly twenty years I have spent as a self-storage operator, I have witnessed situations both strange and sad. Many people have a need for storage space after a divorce, a death in the family, or a failing business, all of which are opportunities to introduce them to Christ.

This past winter was disastrous for our community. Heavy rains caused flooding that forced many to evacuate their homes. I encouraged my manager, a spirit-filled woman, to offer free storage space to flood victims.

One woman told us that no one else had offered her family any help. Even her husband’s mother was charging them to stay with her temporarily. The mother-in-law told her that the flooding was a curse because they didn’t believe in Jesus.

The woman asked why we were helping people. My manager shared with her that the Lord had told us to do this. The woman tearfully asked my manager to “pray to her god” for her. My manager prayed over her for peace, and the woman left.

A week later, the woman returned. She shared that she had received great peace after being prayed with, and that they had been able to pay for repairs on their car with the money saved from the storage rental.  Then she told my manager that she wanted to be saved, along with her husband and her children. My manager immediately began the process of connecting them with a local church. She also offered the woman some furniture that a previous tenant had left for anyone in need.

Overwhelmed, the woman began to weep, exclaiming, “I didn’t know that God ran a business!”
