Play It Safe

Galatians 2:20-21

… I no longer live, but Christ lives in me… if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

In these challenging verses, God is speaking to the Galatians through Paul. God knew that eventually each of us would have to face this truth also. At times, I find it easier to run from hearing the truth in my own life rather than to face it. How about you? It’s much easier to “play it safe” and just obey the law. Jesus doesn’t teach his followers to play it safe though.

The above scripture tells me that I can be living by the law day in and day out and still miss the mark. Christ took on the flesh so that each of us could take on his Holy Spirit. I can’t be perfected in or by the law. I’d be a liar if I said I could. We don’t earn holiness; it’s freely given and paid for by the blood of Christ. If we think anything different, we are calling him a liar.

So, if we no longer live, are we dead? Yes. We have died to our old lives and are born into a new life with Jesus. It’s this new life that will not allow us to play it safe. I love existing inside my comfort zone, just like most of you. That’s the place where I can rule, judge, manipulate, discriminate, get lazy, become filled with myself, and also hide. Our comfort zones are what have to die though, in order for Jesus’ life to live in and through us.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE: What part of my comfort zone am I willing to die to so that Jesus can live in me? When will I give God permission to live out his purpose in my life? Whom or what am I hiding from? Is it God?
